Curtain set to rise on newly refurbished Assembly Rooms Theatre
(23 October 2019)
To celebrate completion of the £2.4million renovation project, our popular Assembly Rooms Theatre is now open for business and welcoming visitors to a free Open Day event this Saturday 26 October from 10am – 5pm.
New look venue
Visit the theatre to take a guided tour behind the scenes and see for yourself the completed redevelopment work. The year-long restoration project has included making parts of the 190-seat venue more accessible to wheelchair users, creating a modern theatre venue in a historic setting.
This unique opportunity will allow you to be amongst the first to view the refurbished Box Office area and 150 year old theatre’s original ceiling restored to its former glory. The renovated venue also includes improvements to the workshop areas, dressing room and toilet facilities to make the theatre more user friendly for performers and audiences.
Free Open Mic Night
The Open Day will be followed by a free ‘Open Mic Night’ from 7.30pm, where the audience can enjoy comedy, music and dance from some of Durham University’s talented student performers.
Kate Barton, Head of Student Theatre for Durham University and Theatre Manager said; “We can’t wait to welcome performers and audiences back to the theatre. It is a fantastic venue and we really want to let people see what we have done here to put The Assembly Rooms right at the heart of the city’s cultural community”
The Assembly Rooms is home to Durham University Student Theatre, made up of 27 individual companies, and two local theatre companies ‘Grim Up North’ and ‘Elysium Theatre’.
This seasons packed programme will include comedy from The Durham Revue, drama with performances of Oscar Wilde's 'Salome' and a colourful, family-friendly production of 'Sita' to celebrate Diwali.
The Assembly Rooms Theatre will be open form 10am – 5pm this Saturday 26 October. This is a free drop in event and everyone is welcome
