Our students among UK’s most satisfied
(3 July 2019)
Thinking of studying with us? Then you’ll be joining some of the most satisfied students in the UK.
According to the 2019 National Student Survey (NSS), we have maintained an overall satisfaction score of 85 per cent, once again rating above the national average.
Investing in an even better experience
But while we are delighted that our students are so satisfied with their overall experience here, we want to do even better.
That’s why we’ve invested £40m in a new Teaching and Learning Centre, where students will benefit from new learning spaces, the latest technology, and over 400 study spaces. We’ve invested a further £31m in refurbishing and extending our Sports and Wellbeing Park, with new facilities that will sustain competition at the highest levels of British University Sport and tsupport increasing overall levels of student participation in sport and physical activity.
Both of these facilities will open later this year, with a new College and student facilities at our Mount Oswald site opening for the 2020 academic year.
What is the NSS?
The 2019 National Student Survey (NSS) is an independent annual survey that evaluates how satisfied final year students are with the quality of their experience at university.
Students rated their satisfaction in eight areas: teaching; assessment and feedback; academic support; organisation and management; learning resources; personal development, Students’ Union, and overall satisfaction.
THE Europe Teaching Ranking
Also this week, Durham University has achieved the position of 32nd in Europe for teaching excellence, according the results of the Times Higher Education (THE) Europe Teaching Ranking.
This is the second year in which the THE data team has created a teaching-led ranking for European countries. The ranking has been designed to give deeper insights into global higher education, with indicators focused around four core performance pillars: resources, engagement, outcomes and environment.
In particular, the league table draws on data from the European Student Survey with questions around student recommendation, collaboration in learning, and engagement in the learning process.
We are a globally outstanding centre of teaching and research excellence as demonstrated by being consistently ranked as one of the world’s leading universities: ranking 78 in the QS World University Rankings 2020. Nationally, we are ranked 7th in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide and most recently 5th in the Guardian University Guide.
