Colleges & wider student experience

Durham Student Theatre has 750 active members and 26 unique theatre companies

Bursting with talent

Durham has one of the most exciting student theatre scenes in the country, with over 80 productions annually and 26 active theatre companies. Our main organisation for theatre is Durham Student Theatre (DST). DST is brimming with creative, like-minded individuals who come together to perform a diverse range of shows. Most importantly, we welcome individuals regardless of their previous experience. Whether you want to be onstage, backstage, produce, direct, or even run your own theatre company, Durham Student Theatre (DST) aims to provide opportunities and support to its members in what they love doing, and to thrive, develop, enjoy and ultimately make the most of the high quality theatre we offer. The three shows selected for NSDF 2017 included Ordinary Days, Swallow and Hidden. Amongst other awards, Durham won The Cameron Mackintosh Award and both awards for Spotlight Most Promising Actor.

3 shows were also selected from Durham for NSDF 2016. Collectively Durham University won 9 awards at the closing ceremony including ‘Best Show’. Durham also had a new writing, verbatim piece called ‘Congestion’ selected for NSDF 2015.

Unique performance venues

The University has its very own 220-seat theatre, The Assembly Rooms Theatre, located right in the heart of Durham City. Students involved in Durham Student Theatre perform productions here every week during term time. We are currently planning a £2 million renovation of the Assembly Rooms Theatre.

Many of our student-led theatrical and musical societies enjoy the opportunity to stage various productions in unique settings around Durham Castle, including the imposing Great Hall and intimate Norman Chapel.

Our unique relationship with Durham's UNESCO World Heritage Site, means that the spectacular Durham Cathedral also plays host to regular student performances, including major concerts with hundreds of student musicians in the knave, to atmospheric drama performed in the Monks Dormitory.

Students also make good use of the city's main professional theatre, Gala Durham, with 5 productions a year staged here. Highlights include The Durham Revue’s annual sketch comedy compilation Comedyfest with performers from The Oxford Revue and Cambridge Footlights, as well as DULOG’s annual week long run of a musical, which have previously included Guys and Dolls, Spamalot and Anything Goes.
