Theatre & the arts
The Arts thrive at Durham University. Whether you're into painting or music or theatre; directing, managing or performing, you'll find it here. And if you don't, then you'll have every opportunity to set something up yourself. You can get involved in the arts at both university-level and within your own college. The possibilities are endless.
Durham Festival of the Arts
Durham Festival of the Arts is an exciting 3 week festival that runs annually in early June. The festival, organised by Music Durham and Durham Student Theatre, features a whole host of events from concerts to masterclasses, plays to photography exhibitions and so much more, in a number of venues across the city.
DFoA is for all of Durham to enjoy; with plenty of opportunities to get involved for students and the local community alike. With a number of strands including music, opera, theatre, comedy, workshops, there is something for everyone.
If performing isn't your thing, then Durham offers many other ways in which to enjoy and engage with the arts. The University is home to wonderful art collections, many of which are owned by and displayed within the Colleges. There is a lively student art scene with exhibtions from societies held throughout the year to showcase student talent.
Durham Book Festival
The University has developed close links with the annual Durham Book Festival which brings national and interantional writers to the city. By creating a post of 'Festival Laureate' we have enabled our students to work with Sir Andrew Motion, Simon Armitage and Carol-Ann Duffy and to take part in festival events as volunteers.
The University is a hub of events and activities for students, staff and the wider local community. Our online 'What's On' Guide provides a great way to organise your social diary as well as helping you get involved in free or subsidised activities. It's a great way to try something different and meet new friends!
