Durham University

Colleges & wider student experience

Information for undergraduates

The collegiate system is what will make your Durham University experience so special and different from anywhere else. College is where you can live, socialise and personally develop; providing you with experiences that can help you to graduate with much more than just a degree.

The expectation is that all first year undergraduate students will live in college accommodation and we guarantee this, although it is not compulsory. Your college will be the place where you socialise and meet students and staff from all levels, disciplines and nationalities. Being part of a college means that you get the benefits of a large, international university whilst living in a smaller, friendly scholarly community.

As well as a range of on-site facilities, colleges offer a comprehensive programme of student-led events and extra-curricular activities as well as personal support. You can even help run aspects of your college, which provides you with unique leadership opportunities and gives you valuable experience for your future career.

Ask anyone here about living and studying at Durham University and they are sure to mention their college, even years after they have left. Our students say that colleges are one of the best aspects of student life at Durham University.

Vaishali Iyer, Combined Honours student

"Being part of a college gives you an immediate sense of belonging, helping you to adjust both to university life and living in the UK. Your college provides the opportunity to get involved in organising aspects of college life; enabling you to develop leadership skills, arrange events, support charities, create new societies; and give something back to your community.

At college I have made some of my closest friends, been involved in a whole range of activities and had the chance to mix with people from all over the world."
