Accommodation Guarantee

The following information applies to full time postgraduate students only, who will begin their studies in September/October 2019 and wish to be considered for college accommodation.

Durham University has a number of bedrooms available to postgraduate students. Subject to room availability, Durham offers a guaranteed offer of single study bedroom as part of our Accommodation Guarantee scheme.

To qualify for the Accommodation Guarantee you must meet the following criteria:

  • accept your official postgraduate offer to study at Durham University
  • submit college preference via the college application applying for college membership with accommodation, by 01 June 2019
  • make a £250 accommodation booking fee payment by 01 June 2019

Applicants who are eligible to express college preferences after accepting their postgraduate offer at Durham will be contacted by the Accommodation and Allocations Office. A link to the college application will be provided to you.

You do not need to hold an unconditional offer to be eligible for the Accommodation Guarantee. Once you have accepted your postgraduate offer, you are eligible to express college preferences.

Applicants who meet the Accommodation Guarantee will be contacted from late July time with an accommodation offer. Offers will continue to be made to applicants from this late July and throughout the summer.

Please note the Accommodation Guarantee scheme applies to our University-managed college accommodation as a whole. This means that we are unable to provide a guarantee of a specific college, catering type of room type as part of the guaranteed offer.  Our guarantee is for a bedroom within our University-managed college accommodation only.

We will always try to provide you with accommodation within the college that you have been originally allocated to and meet your facilities preferences where possible. You may therefore be offered accommodation in another college where there is availability.

If you are offered accommodation in another college and choose to accept it then your college membership will be transferred. This is because you must have membership at the college that you will live in.

It is optional for applicants to accept a college accommodation offer provided to you. If you choose not to accept the accommodation offer you will still remain a member of a college, but will need to then secure private accommodation instead.

Non-Guarantee Waiting List

Applicants can still apply for college accommodation after 01 June deadline date and make the booking fee payment. You will be placed onto a non-guarantee waiting list.

College membership will still be allocated to all applicants.

We unfortunately cannot guarantee that accommodation will be available to anyone who applied after the Accommodation Guarantee deadline date. We advise that even if you are included within our non-guarantee waiting list you should still look into your options private rented accommodation in order to secure housing for your studies. Further information about the non-guaranteed waiting list will be provided to specific applicants throughout the summer.

Family accommodation

There is limited university accommodation available for students bringing their partners or families to Durham. Keenan House at Dryburn Court, about 1 mile north-east of the city centre, contains 70 one, two and three bedroom flats.

We regret that we are unable to offer a guarantee of accommodation to family applicants as demand always exceeds availability. Early applications are strongly advised.
