Durham University

Full Time Postgraduates

Once you have accepted your official postgraduate offer to Durham, you will then have the opportunity to express college preferences.

Applicants with a start date of September/October time will be contacted around April time.

We advise that you take some time to research the different colleges before expressing your preferences, should you have any. From research, you will quickly learn about the collegiate system and which colleges you may wish to express as your preferences. Details regarding postgraduate college information can be found at our webpages.

The Accommodation and Allocations Office will contact you with details of how to submit your preferences. You have the opportunity to decide whether you wish to be considered for one of two options:

  • College membership only

  • College membership with accommodation

Applicants are able to express three college preferences in terms of college membership. If you have a college preference that you wish to be considered it is important that you express this.

If you do not have a college preference we advise that you express an ‘open’ preference as you will still be allocated to one of our 17 colleges for membership.

If you do not express a college preference you will still be automatically allocated to a college for membership only.

If you wish to also be considered for college accommodation you will have the opportunity to express facilities preferences for catering and room type. It is therefore important that you are aware of the different facilities available within each individual college.

Although we aim to maximise and meet as many preferences as possible, we cannot guarantee that these can or will be met. Once the allocation process commences you will be informed of your allocated college for membership. If you also requested to be considered for college accommodation you will be contacted separately.

Part Time and Distance Learning Postgraduates

Part time and distance learning students are automatically allocated to a college for membership only, determined by your programme of study. For further information regarding this process and college membership allocation please visit our webpages here.

College accommodation is not available, however some colleges may be able to provide short-term, temporary accommodation for part time or distance learning students who are members. You should contact your allocated college directly to enquire.
