Private accommodation

Many students at Durham spend at least one year in non-university accommodation. For undergraduate students this is usually in your second year and around two-thirds of our postgraduate students live outside of university accommodation.

A range of private rented accommodation is available in Durham City and its surrounding areas from studio flats, houses to share with your friends, purpose build student accommodation sites and rental rooms within a landlords home. House-hunting tips and advice to search for private accommodation is provided by our Accommodation and Allocations Office.

The Accommodation and Allocations Office provide guidance for living out in the community, when and where to start looking for private accommodation, housing advice and safety, housing terminology to help you with your contract and so much more. This also includes a Rent Guarantor Scheme coming soon.

Durham is a small city, and there is a variety of accommodation types, locations, and costs in the area. Rental charges vary depending upon these factors. Some students live in the surrounding areas that are around 2-4 miles away from the main University Lower Mountjoy site. This area map shows the different locations. These areas also have good public transport links where the services can be accessed at a discount with the use of your student campus card.
