Dr Lewis Mates, SFHEA, School of Government and International Affairs

I am now Associate Professor of Political Theory in SGIA on a teaching track contract after having worked for seventeen years casualised in the sector. A first gen. scholar myself, I have been working with first gens. in my dept. and elsewhere for the last four years, offering academic support and looking to make Durham a more welcoming and supportive place for students from ‘non-traditional’ backgrounds. I have published research on supporting first gens during Covid and have a lot of semi-structured interview data on experiences during Covid and since. The Education Lab scholarship offers me invaluable time and support from DCAD to be able to analyse this data, from which I aim to draw up a list of initiatives and reforms. I have just established a first gen. SIG across the university with DCAD funding to further its agenda 2022-23. There is widespread interest from colleagues across the university and I see working in the SIG and on the scholarship as complementary areas of activity.

Dr Mathilde Roger, SFHEA, Dept of Biosciences

Female Academic Dr Mathilde Roger is an Associate Professor on the Education track in the department of Biosciences. She started teaching at Durham University in 2015.

As a teacher, Mathilde has developed an interactive teaching style supported by appropriate learning technologies. Using her expertise in this field, she has led her colleagues within her department and beyond to provide high quality teaching and engaging learning material for our students. In 2022, Mathilde has been awarded the rank of Senior Fellow of HEA.

Mathilde is now focussing on developing her SoTL profile. She has a special interest in students' self-regulated learning, and inclusive and accessible T&L. Mathilde has been awarded a “Collaborative Innovation Grant” as a lead applicant for her project focussing on Authentic assessment via Active pedagogy facilitated by Technology-enhanced learning and an “Enhancing Accessibility Grant” for her project focusing on Inclusive learning design & Technology-enhanced learning.

In collaboration with Prof Sam Nolan and DCAD, Mathilde is preparing the launch of Durham's new SoTL journal, " Enhancing Teaching and Learning in HE". This journal will support sharing of good practice amongst staff members while supporting early-career staff members to get started on their SoTL journey.
