Youth Engagement and skills acquisition within Africa’s transport sector: promoting a gender agenda towards transitions into meaningful work

Professor Emma Murphy is a Co-Investigator on this ESRC-Global Challenges funded project which examines the experiences of young women in both using, and working within, the transport sector in Africa.

This inter-disciplinary project combines anthropological methods with everyday political economy to understand the inequalities which plague women’s mobility in three African cities in Tunisia, South Africa and Nigeria, and the impact this has upon their economic, political and social welfare.

It also draws upon the experiences of women employed in the transport sector to understand how and why women are excluded from decision-making roles and why transport remains largely ‘a man’s world’.

Working with the Transport NGO Transaid, the project will be offering training workshops in Tunis to help women advance their role in, and influence over, the sector.
