Additive Manufacturing

The additive manufacturing sub-group at CfAI is focussed on using additive manufacturing for optical component production, focussing on surface roughness and quality, and for novel opto-mechanical components, to solve space and weight contraints, reduce cabling requirements, and to allow rapid prototyping. In particular, we are developing techniques for micro-optic components including microlens arrays, optical waveguides, and VPH gratings.

We have an applied focus, such that the outcomes of our developments are to be used within the instruments that the group develops.

We have a Formlabs Form 2 SLA machine (funded by EPSRC seedcorn funding), are developing collaboration with other manufactures, and are developing our own prototyping hardware.
