Changing the Rules of the Game: Populism, Democracy, Autocracy and the Varieties of Political Reality

Abstract

Populism has arisen again, but little discussion is given to its long history or varied definitions. This talk puts current discussions about populism in a logical and historical structure with the intent of showing that while what we see today may appear unique it is anything but.

About the speaker

Timothy Devinney is Professor and Chair of International Business at the Alliance Manchester Business School at the University of Manchester (UK).  He is also Academic Lead (Associate Dean) International and Director of the DBA programme. Immediately prior to joining AMBS in 2019, he was Professor & University Leadership Chair at the University of Leeds (UK) and Pro-Dean of Research & Innovation.  Between 1993 and 2009 he was a Professor and Professorial Research Fellow at the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM), Director of the Centre for Corporate Change and the AGSM Executive MBA.  Before joining the AGSM he held positions on the faculties of The University of Chicago, Vanderbilt University and UCLA and has been a visiting faculty member at numerous universities in Europe (Copenhagen Business School, Humboldt University-Berlin, Wirschaftsuniversität Wien, and the Universities of Hamburg, Trier, Konstanz, Ulm & Frankfurt) and Asia (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology & City University, Hong Kong) and taught at many others (e.g., CEIBS, Helsinki University of Technology & Helsinki School of Economics).
