Durham University

Ustinov College

International Women's Group

Welcome…

A warm welcome to all overseas women coming to live in Durham, UK; whether you are a student, the wife or partner of a student or coming to live in Durham for other reasons.

Our aim…..

To be a meeting place for women with different international backgrounds coming to live in Durham; a place to make friends, share experiences, adjust to life in a different country and feel part of the Durham community.

Our meetings…

We meet on the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 10 am to 12 noon in the Common Room of Keenan House. Keenan House is part of Ustinov College and the address is Old Dryburn Way, Durham.DH1 5BN.

As well as meeting other women and chatting over coffee and biscuits ,we share an activity at each meeting. These are varied: cooking, crafts of all kinds, music, traditions from Britain, indoor gardening and flowers, dance and keep fit activities, discussions on topics of special interest to women and traditions and culture from around the world. We go out on trips too, visiting places of interest in Durham and the surrounding area.

Working and History

Our international women’s group has been welcoming women to Durham for over 25 years.

Between 20 and 30 women come to a typical meeting and, over the last year, we have met more than 60 women from 37 nations. Our programme is organised by the IWG Planning Team; a group of permanent Durham residents, helped by overseas women currently living in Durham.

Children….

You are welcome to bring children along too. They stay in the same room as us, but have their own toys and activity.

Extra events…

Sometimes one of our activities leads to a longer course. Recently we have had a series of meetings on Healthy Eating run by Durham NHS and poetry-writing sessions linked to The Great North Museum which culminated in a trip to Beamish Museum.

Every so often we organise a trip for the whole family and over recent years have enjoyed Hall Hill Farm at lambing time, a day at Marsden Beach, and longer excursions to Holy Island and the Lake District.
