Accommodation Preference Form

Important – we encourage all undergraduate students who wish to live in college accommodation to complete this form before the final deadline of 31 August 2020. It will not be possible to allocate any rooms based on preferences after this date.

Due to extraordinary circumstances, this year we are now able to offer a limited number of self-catered rooms for undergraduate students at our New Kepier Court accommodation block. This is located a 20-minute walk from the Castle  and is purpose-built student accommodation, usually reserved for postgraduate students. Information about accommodation costs can be found at

Please let us know if you would prefer to be allocated self-catered accommodation at New Kepier Court this year:

  • If you have already completed your accommodation preference form, please drop us an email via with the subject title ‘Self-catered’ confirming you would like to be considered for self-catered accommodation. Please let us know before 31 August.
  • If you have yet to complete your accommodation preference form, please indicate in the box ‘special dietary requirements and allergies’ that you would prefer self-catered accommodation and complete your form before 31 August.

We will do our best to meet our students’ preferences where possible, but we are not able to guarantee any accommodation type. If you have completed your form already and do not want self-catered accommodation you don’t need to do anything further.

We always try to accommodate students’ preferences wherever possible, but please be aware that students cannot request a room in a particular accommodation block. The majority of first-year students will be allocated to a single room, but we also have up to 31 shared, twin rooms within the Castle and in our Owengate and Moatside Court accommodation blocks. Students share rooms with students of the same gender identity. If one occupant of a shared room leaves, College reserves the right to place another occupant in the room. Photos of accommodation will be available on our college Instagram from 14 August: @universitycollegedurham.

If you have medical, religious, or cultural reasons for requesting a particular accommodation type, please indicate this clearly in the form below, and send relevant supporting evidence (such as a letter from your GP) to BEFORE 31 August 2020.

You can find out our accommodation costs here ( These are set by the University.

It is important that you provide honest answers to the questions in the form. The purpose of this form is not to impress us, but to give us an accurate idea as possible of your preferences and lifestyle so that we can allocate you to the most appropriate accommodation for your particular needs. Due to the restrictions around Covid-19, it will be difficult to move students into different rooms once Michaelmas term begins.

This form and any supporting evidence must be completed and submitted no later than 5pm on Friday 31 August 2020.
