About Us
University College or “Castle” is a thriving living community within Durham University. We have some 750 undergraduates and 700 postgraduates, and 300 members of University staff are attached to the College through the Senior Common Room. More than 500 of our students live in one of University College’s five accommodation areas, including the Castle itself and 4 nearby residences (Bailey Court, Moatside Court, Owengate on Palace Green; Kepier Court on Claypath). All Castle members share a common aim: learning through academic and co-curricular engagement.
We are the founding college of Durham University
From clubs and societies to mentoring and community service programmes, from leadership development opportunities and robust student support to sports competition and fine arts performance, all University College students (livers in and livers out) participate in the ongoing cultivation of our open, respectful and enriching community of scholars.
Inhabiting a living museum, an 11th century Norman castle provides a compelling backdrop for student involvement and study, yet it is our people who make University College flourish! Supporting our students is a dedicated team and, just as in the more modern Durham University colleges, students have access to a range of facilities to support learning and the wider student experience: College library, gyms, laundry facilities, kitchenettes, study spaces, practice rooms, and more. Together, Castle students and staff care for our cherished facilities to ensure they are accessible to students and guests of the future.
