Accommodation Information

Accommodation Preferences

Some first year students will need to share a room in College, so it is important that you complete the College Membership Form which contains a section on accommodation preferences. If you have good reasons (medical or other) for not wanting to share a room, please state these and the Vice-Master & Senior Tutor will try to accommodate all reasonable requests.

Please complete the form which can be found here.

Accommodation @ Castle

There are two types of accommodation available at University College. That in and around the Castle (the main site), and that at New Kepier Court. Accommodation at the main site is fully-catered, with 3 meals provided per day. Accommodation at New Kepier Court is self-catered, with the option to dine in College either ad-hoc or via a meal package.

We offer rooms at the main College site on two lengths of let: standard and term-time only. Students in term-time only lets are required to move out of their room during the Christmas and Easter vacation periods.

Because of the historic nature of our main College buildings we have several twin rooms in College that some Freshers are required to share. These twin rooms are situated in the Castle and in Owengate, one of the College buildings adjacent to the Castle. The rooms in the Castle are offered on a term-time only let. The shared rooms in Owengate are offered on a standard let. The majority of the shared rooms have ensuite shower rooms. Please note that, unless you let us know about circumstances which prevent you from sharing a room, we will assume that you are able to share.

All single rooms available for Freshers at the main site are outside of the Castle walls and are offered on a standard let. Almost all single rooms at the main site have shared bathroom facilities.

Details and prices of the two lets offered at the main College site can be found on the College website - https://www.dur.ac.uk/university.college/local/current/residenceagreement/

We have accommodation for 89 undergraduate students at our New Kepier Court residence, which is a 10-15 minute walk from the Castle. These rooms all have ensuite shower rooms, are self-catered, and offered on a standard let. Students in self-catered accommodation at New Kepier Court have the option to purchase meal packages in order to dine in College.

Contents Insurance Cover For Students

Durham University has arranged contents insurance cover from Endsleigh Insurance Services Ltd. for students who reside in College accommodation.

Enter in your policy number HH1288 to check your policy details - endsleigh.co.uk/personal/home-insurance/check-your-student-cover/ .

Visit the review cover link to:

  • Check what is covered.
  • Check key exclusions and limitations.
  • Check your policy excess.
  • Check how to make a claim, extend and personalise your cover.

It is important to find out exactly what the basic level of cover is as you may find that this is not sufficient for your individual circumstances and you need to extend it to protect all of your possessions both in and outside of your room.

Car Parking

Durham University has very limited parking students and has a strict criteria that needs to be met before a permit will be issued. Applications for car parking permits can be found here.

Due to our location, there are no parking spaces available at University College.
