Open Modules

At Durham, many degrees permit students to take 'open' modules (modules that aren't tied to a specific degree), particularly during the first year of the programme at Level 1. These modules might be in your own department or, depending on the programme regulations for your specific degree, they might include open modules offered by other departments. to help students select these modules, the University has compiled a list of all current Level 1 Open modules, available from the following webpage:

Please note: not all modules listed will run every year, so please check the module availability box (top left corner of the module outline) to see whether any specific modules is running. The module and programme information here is for current modules. Modules do change year-on-year, and are amended to take account of, for example: changing staff expertise, disciplinary developments, the requirements of external bodies and partners, and student feedback.

Submitting module choices

When choosing Open Modules, the majority of Departments advise students to Submit their choices on Banner Self Service. Departments run sessions during Induction Week, where you can discuss modules available and be advised on your choices by members of academic staff.

Certain Departments require students to speak to a member of staff to confirm pre-requisites for modules in the first instance, these departments are:

  • Chemistry
  • Classics and Ancient History
  • History
  • Music
  • Physics
