DUHC W2s gain promotion to the Conference North National League

(29 June 2021)

We are delighted to confirm that in light of the recent England Hockey league restructuring, the DUHC Women’s 2nd XI have been promoted to the National League Conference North. After a severely affected 2020/21 season due to the coronavirus pandemic, the basis for the promotion was historical league positions in the 2019/20 season, in which the W2s produced a string of stellar performances to finish in second place, winning 19 out of 22 games encompassing a 13-game unbeaten run that saw them not lose a game between late November 2019 and the end of the season in March 2020. The promotion represents an exciting new challenge for the W2s and they will no doubt face some stern tests as hockey begins to return back to normal for the 2021/22 season.

The W2s join three other DUHC teams in the England Hockey National Leagues and puts the programme in an exceptional position of being one of only two university hockey clubs to have their top two Men’s and Women’s hockey teams competing in National Leagues. The elite performance programme that runs at the top end of the club allows 1st and 2nd teams to train together on a regular basis, encouraging regular sharing of information and easing the transition as players move between teams throughout the season.

DUHC Head of Hockey, Gareth Weaver-Tyler, commented on how this promotion exemplifies the success of the hockey programme throughout the club, saying “to achieve having all four top teams in the national league is a superb achievement for the club. We are extremely proud of the success of the whole club and it is in line with our one club mentality. It is also a fantastic advocate for our ability to allow all players to fulfil their potential and to have minimal differences between playing standards between our teams. I would like to personally thank all the players, coaches and support staff as everyone has contributed so much to achieve this level of success.”

Look out for the fixture release for all four of DUHC’s National League teams later this summer on the DUHC twitter and Instagram.
