A successful first week back for The Fitness Centre and Queens Campus Sport
(19 April 2021)
It’s been a successful first week back for both of our University gyms since they opened their doors last Monday 12th April to staff, members of the community and students who have remained on campus over the Easter break.
The team have been delighted to welcome new and existing members across both sites back and are continually working hard to make sure the gym is a safe environment to return to training and everyone who walks through the door enjoys being back in the facility.
Danielle Neilson, Queens Campus member said, “It’s great to be back working out at the gym at Queens Campus. All the measures the team have put in place to keep everybody safe are working so well I feel extremely reassured.”
Amber Leona Colclough, Estates and Facilities Relationship Manager at Durham University and Fitness Centre user continued, “I personally think the best thing about the gym at present is the culture change. You can see everyone cleaning down equipment after they have used it and ensuring it is safe for the next person to use. As soon as you step in you feel like you have never been away and that is down to the friendly and helpful staff. Not only is the gym a safe place to enter, it mentally makes you feel better, especially given the current situation, it really sets you up for the day and I have noticed a boost in myself this week, so thank you.”
Over this last week the focus has been on re-opening both sites safely in line with Government guidelines. The booking system has allowed the team to efficiently manage capacities and keep everyone, including the staff safe at all times and the one way system ensures members can move around the gym easily but without coming into contact with others.
Sports Development Co-ordinator, Peri Anderson said, “The team have worked hard to put procedures in place to make members feel comfortable and safe on their return to the gym. I feel the lockdowns have made us appreciate more the importance of physical activity and keeping ourselves fit and healthy. We look forward to seeing our regular members start to return and hopefully see some new faces join too.”
The team are still aiming to cater for users who don’t yet feel ready to return to the gym or would like to use online classes to supplement their gym programme and are still regularly uploading two brand new online classes to their YouTube channel each week. Every Monday there will be a new circuit class which will have a different focus each week and on Friday there will be low impact circuits released concentrating on improving mobility.
