Former PhD Student, Dr. Kate Baker, appointed director of Performance at UK Sport

(8 March 2021)

Former PhD student, Dr Kate Baker, was, last month, appointed Director of Performance for UK Sport. Dr Baker will join the UK Sport’s Executive Team in May, with a responsibility for leading UK Sport’s Performance Teams and their investment in supporting Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

Dr Baker, studied for her Masters and PhD in Sport Science at Durham between 2008 and 2012 and has, since then, been the Programme Lead for Sports Science at the London Metropolitan University, led sports science and nutrition programmes at Saracens RFC, worked with UK Sport as the Head of Performance Pathways and currently works with the Football Association, where she leads the Performance Insight Team.

Since leaving Durham, Dr Baker, has returned as part of the annual alumni lecture series for the Sport department sharing her story since graduating, as well as her experiences and insights from working within the sports industry and with elite athletes.

The Director of Sport during Dr Baker’s time of study, Peter Warburton, said, “We are absolutely delighted with the appointment of Kate baker to one of the most senior roles in British Sport. Everyone at Durham University is thrilled for Kate and what is particularly impressive is the fact that she’s taken on lead roles in what is traditionally a male dominated sporting arena.”

On International Women’s Day, we recognise Dr. Baker as an incredible role model for all of our University students and someone who can inspire and empower them to pursue their career and life ambitions.
