International Women's Day 2021
(4 March 2021)
Monday 8th March will mark International Women’s Day (IWD) 2021, an event which celebrates inspiring women. For Team Durham that involves highlighting the exceptional individuals involved in Sport at Durham University.
Women’s sport has come a long way since mid-way through the 20th century, where females were banned from participating as it was considered ‘unfeminine’. However, today, 60% of women and girls still do not meet the recommended exercise guidelines. We therefore want to use IWD as a vehicle to promote our sporting role models to encourage female participation in order to increase both physical and mental wellbeing.
We are extremely lucky and proud to be able to open our doors to so many talented sports women and to be a part of their journey. These inspiring athletes go on to become successful role models, achieving both sporting and academic excellence during their time at Durham and using their University experience as a steppingstone to go on and achieve so much more.
This International Women’s Day, we want to celebrate those achievements by featuring several of our talented Durham University sporting women. Follow us on twitter and facebook as we share insights from international athletes, College Sport heroes, follow academic journeys and career success stories. Join us on Instagram as some of our current female National League Sporting role models will take over the channel for the day. Tune in to hear about their journey and experiences, follwed by a Q&A.
IWD is a chance to reflect, appreciate and celebrate women who inspire us to grasp opportunities. Join us on our mission to celebrate female athletes, empowering women and girls through sport.
