Africa and Brexit. Africa/Brexit. Afrexit.

9th December 2019, 13:00 to 14:00, Room IM201, SGIA, Al-Qasimi Building, Durham University, Graham Harrison

Global Policy Institute Seminar

The seminar will be followed by a sandwich lunch.

All welcome.

In this seminar, Graham Harrison will address how we should consider the impact of Brexit on Britain’s relations to other parts of the world.

The paper engages with this question in relation to the UK’s close historic relationship with Africa. The paper suggests that we need to rethink some established fundamental categorisations before we can explore Brexit and Africa, and in doing so, it becomes possible to move away from increasingly outdated assumptions about agency and difference. By doing this, we ask not only what impact Brexit will have on Africa but also what African politics tells us about Brexit.
