At the School of Government and International Affairs, we combine a long tradition of expertise in a wide variety of fields within politics, political theory, political economy and international relations with a depth of expertise in regional specialisms. We provide an exceptional environment for learning, training and research.
We offer a unique opportunity to study and understand specific parts of the world in theoretical and disciplinary context, in a School that has established itself as one of the most dynamic and distinctive academic units in the UK.
''We have a thriving, cosmopolitan student community. Currently there are students from over 50 countries studying here. Our postgraduate community is significant, with over 100 students taking our Taught Masters courses in previous years.'
Professor John Williams, Head of School
We have a number of world class researchers working in the areas of political theory, comparative politics and international relations. Our institutes and research centres promote key research agendas and are focal points for networking within the department and encouraging a diverse mix of collaborations between leading researchers and programmes taking place across the world.
Our research is also greatly enhanced by the presence of one of the biggest research student groups in Durham University, with a broad cohort of students pursuing research degrees, representing nearly 50 different nationalities.
We educate students with high quality, research-led teaching and encourage them to display the highest levels of commitment to educational excellence. Supporting them to consistently innovate is a central feature of what we do in order to ensure that graduates will have outstanding skills to take into the world of work.
Our aim is to produce graduates who are self-aware, reflective and ambitious global citizens.
