Philosophy and Religion

Each year, this module addresses the philosophical issues raised by religious teachings and practices. In 2011-12, the seminars will focus on some of the ethical, metaphysical and epistemological issues raised by Buddhist teachings and practices. The first seminar will introduce students to the field of Buddhist philosophy, drawing attention to the importance of cross-cultural work and to some of the difficulties it involves. The remaining seminars will address six topics:

  • Suffering
  • Not-self
  • Ethics
  • Abhidharma
  • Madhyamaka
  • Yogacara
