Study Abroad Scholarships for 2019/20

The International Office are offering 10 x £1000 scholarships for Widening Participation students applying to the Overseas Exchange programme. Widening Participation includes students with a household income of lower than £42,875 and who are therefore eligible for a full maintenance grant from student finance. There are a number of other indicators, so if you would identify as being a widening participation student, please indicate this on your application form. This information will be kept confidential but will be checked with Student Registry prior to a scholarship being offered.

British Council Hong Kong Scholarships for Excellence

The Scholarships for Excellence are offered by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and are usually worth up to £3,000, depending on how long the recipients stay in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong

Applicants must:

  • be UK passport holders studying undergraduate courses in England.
  • be interested in or have already applied for undergraduate study on exchange at one of the universities in Hong Kong.
  • have a good academic record with a GPA of at least 3.0 or equivalent
Scholarships for 19/20 have not yet been confirmed but will likely launch in Feburary 2019 with an anticipated deadline of April 2019 Scholarships for Excellence

Singapore DUO Award

Singapore Students applying for the exchange programme at the National University of Singapore are also eligible to apply for the DUO-Singapore Exchange Fellowship award which provides selected students with up to 4000 Euro for a semester's exchange. Not yet released but expected to be in early 2019 National University of Singapore website

BUTEX Scholarships

USA/Canada BUTEX, the British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association, offers scholarships each year for undergraduate students who have been offered a place as an exchange student at a US or Canadian partner university. Not yet released but expected to be June 2019 BUTEX

JASSO Scholarships

Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) offers scholarship for qualified international students who are accepted by a Japanese University on a student exchange agreement or short-term basis from 8 days to one year.


Applicants must:

  • be enrolled in a regular course of study at their home university
  • accepted onto an exchange programme at a Japanese partner university
  • demonstrate excellent academic and personal records at their home university
  • be eligible for 'Student Visa'
  • not be in receipt of any other scholarship from the Japanese Government

Successful candidates will receive a stipend of JPY 80,000 per month
