Language Requirements

Limited modules are available in English, as well as Japanese language courses. Please visit the Kumamoto website to access module information.


Students who enroll in Kumamoto University through the Kumamoto University Short-Term Exchange Program are given priority for accommodations in the Kumamoto University International House, the dormitory for international students that houses over 200 international students. Located about 1.5km east of the campus, it takes about 10 minutes by bicycle from the International House to the university.

The cost of accommodation is 16,500 yen/month (£115/month)

Average living expenses are approximately 80,000 JPY (£550) per month (including food, transport, accommodation and miscellaneous costs).

Exchange students must first apply for a 'Certificate of Eligibility' in order to obtain a study visa to enter Japan.

International students staying in Japan are required to enroll in the National Health Insurance Scheme (Approximately 1,200 JPY per month).
