Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any additional fees?
It is recommended that international students will need around £800 per month to cover accommodation and living costs, excluding their tuition fees.
At Durham University all undergraduate students are encouraged to live in one of the university colleges for at least the first year of their course. Information on the cost of living in a college can be found at: http://www.dur.ac.uk/colleges/undergraduate/costs/
Postgraduate students can choose to live in a college or to rent private accommodation. Most postgraduate students apply to join Ustinov College which is our designated postgraduate college. Details of the Ustinov College costs can be found at: http://www.dur.ac.uk/colleges/postgraduate/costs/
We encourage all of our incoming students to live in college, wherever possible, as it allows you to make the most of the opportunities our unique collegiate experience provides. However, if you would prefer to stay in private-sector accommodation, information on accommodation opportunities can be found at the Accommodation Offices at Durham and at Queen's Campus. The Accommodation Offices can answer any queries you may have and check over any contracts for privately rented accommodation.
To help international students to plan and manage their money two independent charities UKCISA and UNIAID have developed the 'International Student Calculator'. You may like to use this to work out how much money you will need in order to study in the UK.
