Entry requirements

Foundation

For admission onto Durham University's International Foundation Year, students will require five high passes (at Grade B3 or above) in relevant subjects in SSCE (Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination)

Undergraduate

  • IB Diploma
  • UK A Levels
  • Advanced Placement Examinations (3 APs at Grade 4 or above)
  • Recognised UK Foundation Programme

Taught postgraduate

Applicants who hold a Bachelors Degree (minimum 2:1) from a recognised institution will be considered for admission to a Masters degree. Some exceptions can be made for students with relevant work experience or with high 2.2s (58%) or GPA 2.8 from prestigious Nigerian Universities.

Research postgraduate

Applicants who hold a Masters Degree will be considered for admission to PhD study.

English Language Requirements

The minimum entry levels for international students onto any programme of study except the Foundation Programme at Durham University are listed below. All qualifications must be taken within two years* of the start of the academic programme. Acceptable English Language examinations for entry to Durham University are:

  • IELTS: 6.5 (no component under 6.0)
  • Cambridge Proficiency (CPE): Grade C
  • Cambridge Advanced (CAE): Grade A
  • Cambridge IGCSE First Language English at Grade C or above
  • Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language at Grade B or above
  • GCSE English Language at grade C or above
  • Pearson Test of English (overall score 62 (with no score less than 56 in each component)

Many departments/schools require different (higher) levels for entry onto particular programmes of study. Please check with the International Office or your Department for clarification of the English Language level required for entry to your chosen programme.
