Meet the Scholars
Sasha Safonova - Fulbright Postgraduate Award 2019
"Devoting the first year of my postgraduate studies to research among cosmology's brightest minds at Durham is a true luxury. The Fulbright scholarship has enabled me to work on a project that will make an immediate contribution to one of the world's largest dark energy experiments. Fulbright's focus on research, combined with Durham's ground-breaking contributions to the international scientific community, create an unparalleled scholastic environment that can augment a PhD or a career outside of academia. Durham's system of residential colleges complements the academic excellence of its research. Being an active member of my college has helped me create lasting friendships with postgraduates in and outside the sciences. After the Fulbright year, I look forward to returning to the United States and collaborating on research with the academics I meet at Durham."
Dan Kinch - Marshall Scholar 2018
“I pursued an MSc in mathematical sciences during my year at Durham, and it provided exactly what I was looking for as I exited my undergrad years. The wide array of course options at Durham, combined with the high level of flexibility in choosing my modules, enabled me to dive deeper into the specific topics that interested me without needing to worry about studying any that didn’t.” … “Outside of my academic programme, the university provided me with a multitude of extracurricular activities to choose from, and I was able to both delve deeper into old passions and discover new ones such as improvised comedy and competitive debate.” … “Perhaps my single favourite aspect of attending Durham was its strong college system, and in particular my membership in Grey College. Though I came to Durham as an international student who knew nobody at the university, Grey provided me the chance for an immediate group of friends, and within weeks of our freshers’ week icebreaker session, my MCR friends and I were planning dinners in town and house parties on the weekends” “I found Durham to be the perfect location for my master’s year, and my only regret in living there was that I couldn’t have stayed there longer.”

Dr Susan Weller - Fulbright Scholar 2018
Home Institution: University of Texas Medical Branch, Galvaston, Texas, USA
Host: Durham University Anthropology Department
"I enjoyed my stay in Durham & believe I got my batteries recharged! In the Fall term, the Durham University Anthropology Department graciously hosted me on a Fulbright Fellowship. I had the pleasure of attending Departmental presentations and learning about British Anthropology. The University intellectual community broadened my knowledge in my specific area of research, but also the breadth of other areas in anthropology and even unrelated fields (research on the expanding universe!). Exposure to new and paradigm shifting research has made a lasting impact on me and my future work. The campus and town offered a wonderful environment! I enjoyed walking everywhere, sampling different restaurants, and meeting new people! It was a wonderful experience!"
