Mike, Kristen, Robin, Becky, Mark, Dan and Karen won the Global Curriculum Award at the Durham Global Awards 2023 for their extensive work on developing a timely, innovative and world-leading curriculum offering.

The new Level 3 module entitled 'Archaeology and Global Sustainable Development' aims to critically investigate, evaluate and discuss the intersection of the study of the past and cultural heritage, and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. The UN Sustainable Development Goals barely mention heritage which is symptomatic of a struggle to articulate 'utilitarian' values important to humanity and its future.

World-leading research

The creation of the module is a significant synthesis of multiple research projects and contributes directly to research-led teaching. It also has direct links to world-leading projects, research groups and research centres such as the Centre for the Ethics of Cultural Heritage and the Centre for Cultural Heritage Protection led in the Department of Archaeology.

Enhancing global knowledge

The discussions allow multiple voices and opinions from students without advocating particular expected stances. Anecdotal evidence so far indicates students are very engaged to voice their views and enter conversation with module leaders. It considers topics including sustainable cities, water management, ecosystems management, climate change, conflicts and health, and importantly looks at global coverage, not limited to a Eurocentric sample or voices.
