To book a course

  • check the course titles and timetable on the website and decide which course(s) you wish to join.
  • you can check course descriptions and room locations on the online booking system.
  • click the booking button on your chosen course page to book a place. If the course has more than one session, you should book a place on all sessions.

There is high demand for ALC courses, so we request that you only book courses you know you will be able to attend. When courses are full, waiting lists are automatically created- you will be contacted if a place becomes available on your chosen course if you join the waiting list.

Unbooked attendance

It is sometimes possible to attend a course without booking, if the course is not full. However, if you would like to make sure you get a place, you should take the time to book a place on the courses you plan to attend. You can make a booking until 6 hours before the course starts.

Priority entrance is given to students who have booked a place on the course if the course is full. Each room has a maximum capacity which we must adhere to (and some courses have a maximum number of students), and additional students past this limit cannot be admitted.

If you do attend a course that you have not booked, please make sure you add your details to the bottom of the register, so we can ensure the course is credited to you on the booking system.

Class Attendance

We understand that your main priority whilst studying at Durham is to succeed on your academic programme, and as such occasionally academic commitments will prevent you from attending ALC courses you have booked.

Since our purpose is to help you excel, we do not mind if you have to miss an ALC course due to other commitments. We do, however, ask that if you cannot attend an ALC courses you have booked you withdraw from the course in order to allow another student to take the palce.

We do not need to know why you withdraw or cannot attend. However, students who repeatedly fail to attend courses they have booked without withdrawing will be prevented from booking future courses, in the interests of fairness to other students.

If you are unsure of the etiquette for booking/taking/withdrawing from ALC courses, you can check the 'Joining Instructions' section of each course on the online booking system.

Please contact us at if you have any queries regarding booking and attendance.
