Which Academic Language and Communication Courses Should I Take?

We have a wide range of ALC courses available to students. These are arranged across 4 main areas so you can quickly and easily determine which courses you might find helpful:

  • Specific Types of Academic Writing
  • Specific Academic Skills
  • Academic Language Use
  • UK Academic Culture

You will be able to see a full list of courses available (as well as a timetable) by checking Current ALC Courses.

Most courses are suitable for both home and international students- if a course is specifically for a certain group of students it will say this in the title.

Most courses are suitable for students of all levels- if a course has different content for undergraduates and postgraduates, there will be two versions of that course. This will be reflected in the course title on the booking system.

Many courses are suitable for students across all disciplines. The courses that are most likely to be differentiated in this area are the Specific Types of Academic Writing courses. Several of these have different versions depending on which Faculty you are in. Again, if there are different versions of a course this will be reflected in the course title.

If you need some guidance on which courses will be most beneficial to you, you can come to one of our ALC Drop-In sessions at the start of term for a ten minute chat with one of our experienced tutors. This will allow them to make some personalised recommendations for you. You can see when the ALC Drop-In sessions are running and express interest in attending by visiting the online booking system.
