DCAD: English Language Support

About the Department

Although Durham Centre for Academic Development (DCAD) has multiple branches, the section based in Dunelm House provides high quality academic language teaching expertise for students at all levels; pre-university entry, undergraduate and postgraduate.

DCAD also plays a central role in enhancing the experience of both home and international students during their studies through the provision of an extensive academic language and skills support and enhancement programme.

Having such tailor-made programmes is an important part of the DCAD's development plans over the next few years and with increasing numbers of international students coming to Durham, these courses have a significant role in the University's Internationalisation agenda.

Summer Pre-sessional Courses

Students holding offers from a Durham University department that haven't yet met their academic language condition can take one of our Pre-sessional courses. We run courses over 30 weeks, 20 weeks, 10 weeks and 5 weeks, and you will be offered the course that most suits your language requirements. The pre-sessional programme is one of the few in the UK to be validated by the British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes (BALEAP)

Academic Language Support

DCAD also runs a very successful programme of academic skills and development courses for students currently studying at the University, as well as a one-to-one consultation service whereby students can receive an individual consultation about a piece of work or an academic language issue they are experiencing.

Postgraduate Study

DCAD has two MA programmes- MA TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and MA Applied Linguistics for TESOL

Undergraduate Modules

At undergraduate level we offer Everyday English Discourse (a module which is designed specifically for Erasmus and exchange students) and English Language Teaching (open to all undergraduate students).
