Literary Invention and Literary History
An Inventions of the Text seminar.
Derek Attridge will present a section from his forthcoming book, The Work of Literature, which is a sequel to The Singularity of Literature that expands and refines its arguments. A large part of the new book is taken up by a reconsideration of the arguments of the earlier work written in the form of an interview or cross-examination; in the seminar, he will discuss some of the key terms developed in his account of the specificity of literature as a cultural and linguistic practice (terms such as "invention", "singularity", "otherness", "performance", "idioculture" and "act-event"), and consider their possible role in understanding the apparent transcendence of historical time that literary works appear to be able to achieve.
