Congratulations and Welcome to the Department of English Studies

Professor Peter Garratt on a beachOn behalf of the Department and all my colleagues, welcome to Durham, where we hope you will spend three enjoyable and rewarding years, not only in the study of English Literature, but also taking advantage of all the opportunities university life has to offer.

Professor Peter Garratt
Head of Department

University student
Studying English and History at Durham has been really enjoyable, and Induction week for me was an exciting opportunity to find out as much as I could about the extraordinary opportunities the Departments, my College and the wider University and city has to offer. There's an amazing range of ways in which all of them offer challenge but also support, and it's important that you take the time to make sure that you have made yourself well-informed about how to get the most out of your time here. Enjoy Fresher's week, but don't forget that it is only one of many opportunities you will get to have fun, meet new people and see the best of what Durham has to offer. Welcome and enjoy!

Your first week in Durham – University Induction Week Events Timetable

The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle into student life.

To help you keep track of where you need to be, and what you need to do during your first busy days at university, in your College and your Department, we have created a day-by-day University Induction Planner. This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything - from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your Department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
