Between Memory and the Future: Medieval Romance

6th November 2019, 17:00 to 19:00, Hogan Lovells Lecture Theatre, Law School, Palatine Centre, Professor Helen Cooper (University of Cambridge)

A lecture in memory of Dr Jamie McKinstry, given by Professor Helen Cooper. The lecture will followed by a drinks reception. Free and open to everyone.

Memory, as Jamie McKinstry's book highlighted, is an important element in the plots of many medieval romances. Beyond that, however, they both set out to preserve the memory of the past, in the form of remembered heroes or legendary history, and to predict the future promised to a dynasty. In that our own age also represents a future they did not foresee, they also predict many of our own literary images and structures.

Helen Cooper is an Honorary Fellow of University College, Oxford, a Life Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge, and Professor Emeritus of Medieval and Renaissance English in the University of Cambridge. She has written extensively on Chaucer and on the overlap between the medieval and the early modern, including The English Romance in Time: Transforming Motifs from Geoffrey of Monmouth to the Death of Shakespeare.
