Durham Castle goes Medieval

Enjoy a FREE Medieval -themed Family Day at Durham Castle on Sunday 25th June.

Castle Community Action (CCA) and Durham Castle Museum have teamed together to offer you a unique experience at Durham Castle. Prepare for a Medieval family day out as Durham Castle and its beautiful grounds take a step back in time to the Medieval period! Immerse yourself in the Courtyard with activities inspired by the Medieval period and even see some real medieval objects. Whilst the Great Hall will be transformed into a royal banquet area complete with crafts and story telling, so bring a picnic fit for royalty!

Activities available will include:

  • Bouncy castle

  • Story telling of heroes and monsters

  • Object handling (real medieval objects)

  • Craft activities

  • Face-painting

  • Scavenger hunt

  • Family fun tours of the Castle

Places for the event itself are limited and need to be booked in advance through Eventbrite.

Mini-family fun tours of the Castle

Please note that booking a place on the main event does NOT guarantee you a space on one of the Mini-family fun tours of the Castle . These are booked separately and can be reserved up to 48 hours prior to the event by emailing cca.outreach@durham.ac.uk or booking on the day, all places will be allocated on a first come basis. The time slots available are:11:15, 12:00, 12:45, 13:30 and 14:15.

Tickets are required for both adults and children (including infants) and you are welcome to stay for the entire day! Picnic areas will be available both inside and outside, with complimentary drinks available. Fancy dress is strongly encouraged!

Please note that due to the nature of the building the tour and activities may not suitable for under 5s.

The historic nature and layout of the Castle means that the majority of the building is inaccessible to wheelchair users and pushchairs. The tour route involves some steps and staircases, some of which are uneven.

Please bring a print out of your ticket or your booking number to the event.
