Mentoring can make a huge difference to our job satisfaction, success and progression. At Durham, we aim to foster mentoring in departments and make it a valued part of University life for academic staff at all career stages.
Durham University’s academic strategy aims to attract, develop, and retain the best scholars across all tracks. Effective mentoring supports this aim, helping academic staff to meet targets relating to excellence in research, education and citizenship. Mentoring assists in the University goal of ‘job satisfaction, productivity and career progression'.
Our mentoring policy ensures that all academic staff members, regardless of career stage or track, are able to benefit from mentoring.
Mentoring addresses the distinct needs of individuals across all aspects of research, teaching, and citizenship.
Mentoring, by its focus on individuals, offers a holistic approach to the different aspects of an academic’s work.

We run a range of mentor training events each year, targeting support towards different groups of people.
We offer workshops within departments on topics such as Mentoring Experienced Staff, Mentoring for Wellbeing, and Identifying and Developing Mentoring Goals.
We run centrally bookable workshops where all staff can sign up for training on topics of use to both mentors and mentees such as Getting the most out of mentoring or What gets in the way of good mentoring.
We also provide training to specific groups of colleagues such as our Career Development Fellows, the Inclusive Impact Mentoring Programme, or the Pro North East project which trains colleagues to mentor racially minoritised PhD students across all five regional north east Universities.
Our training includes asynchronous, self-paced options to make it widely available to all colleagues whenever they need it.
