How to Apply

We strongly encourage applicants to submit applications as early as possible, although there is no formal deadline. Please see the entry and language requirements below first.

Entry Requirements

PhD

For entry to the PhD you will be required to have achieved a First Class honours Bachelor's degree, or at least a 2:1 Integrated Master’s degree or a Master's degree in an appropriate subject, from a recognised university (or equivalent).

MScR

Applicants for the MSc by Research will be required to have achieved a 2:2 MPhys or 2:1 Bachelor's degree.

1. Research section(s) of interest

Select one or more research sections from the following:

Please note that you do not need to submit more than one application, even if you are interested in more than one project or research area within Physics. Please list your chosen research section in the 'Field of Study' section.

2. Qualifications

Please indicate on the application form your current University and degree. Also please ensure that you upload all appropriate academic certificates and transcripts to your application.

3. References

  1. provide contact details (specifically email addresses) for 2 referees who we can contact for a reference. We would prefer it if you did not upload the reference yourself, however, if you do please ensure it is on letter-headed paper with contact information to allow us to confirm it is an original.
  2. ensure you UNTICK the boxes on the application form next to referee details which allows us to request a reference before an offer is made.

4. Research Proposal

We suggest you provide a short document of a few paragraphs (no longer than 1 page). This will give us an idea of your research interests.

5. CV/resume

6. English Language certificates

For anyone whose first language is not English we require an English Language Certificate (sat within 24 months of the anticipated start date of your course).

7. Funding source

Please detail on the application which funding source you are interested in or have secured, for example, CSC, DDS, STFC, EPSRC.

Please note: your application cannot be considered until we have all this information.

The University application system can be slow to complete. The Admissions Department have been made aware of the issue. In the meantime, please accept our apologies.

There are no set deadlines for applications to the Postgraduate degrees in the Department of Physics, but there may be deadlines attached to certain studentships, awards or specific projects offered by the Department.
