Academic Development for Students

Academic Development for Students support all taught students to develop their academic writing, maths and general study skills.

One-To-One Consultations

We offer a free one-to-one consultation service to all registered students, this is the opportunity to discuss a piece of written work or specific difficulty relating to any aspect of your academic English language and literacy performance with an English Language expert from our department.

Academic Language & Communications Course

Successful academic study at University level requires mastery of a range of writing, reading and speaking skills. For some students, departmental expectations of how to write may be very different from what they are used to, and it can quite frequently involve learning a new thinking and writing process. Our Academic Language and Communication (ALC) courses are designed to help students make this transition and acquire the academic language and skills they need to succeed in UK higher education.

The ALC programme currently offers more than 40 different courses to help students take their academic skills to the next level. We also work closely with several academic departments to offer collaborative courses, which help students get more from their Durham experience.

Digital Skills Development

We recognise the importance of good IT skills for all staff and students and the training team have developed a comprehensive suite of training courses to provide the skills needed to carry out study, work and research activities effectively. We deliver training on core university software packages including Microsoft Office and specialist academic applications for all levels of ability. We also provide support for these applications via the IT Help Desk and hold regular drop-in sessions for some of the most popular courses. We can also tailor the standard courses specifically for staff to meet your departmental needs.

The list below includes a range of courses for staff and students - see the individual listings for details of eligibility.
