College Mentors

The College Mentor system is one of the many ways we support you to make the most of your time at Durham University. All of our first-year undergraduates are allocated a College Mentor who looks after a group of about 10-12 students, helping you to make new friends and settle into University life at Durham. Many of our College Mentors have worked at the University, live in the local area or are even Durham graduate students themselves. They look forward to helping you with any questions you may have or pointing you in the right direction for any support or advice you may need. Whether you meet for a coffee and a chat or catch up via Zoom, it is reassuring to know that someone is there for you if you need them.

Role of College Mentors

  • A friendly first point of contact who can help you settle in
  • Help you to get the best out of your wider student experience at Durham University
  • Give tips and advice about living in Durham City and the North East
  • Organise group activities to explore the city and region and make new friends from different parts of the College
  • Coach you throughout the Durham Inspired Award
  • Guide you through your personal development
  • May write a personal (not academic) reference for mentees who have engaged in the Programme.
