When you leave Durham, your degree will be the most important line on your CV, but it will be only one line. A full life led in College will fill the rest.
Josephine Butler College is both a unique place and at a unique time in its development. As the youngest college, the students have the opportunity to shape the spirit of Butler College in a way that few other students have. The significant investment which Durham University has put in our accommodation and facilities amply demonstrates its commitment to our success and to the collegiate ideals: we have the most beautifully appointed en-suite study bedrooms in the University, we have architecturally distinct social buildings with a wide range of facilities, including the JCR lounge, bar, coffee shop, music room, IT suite etc. all with free wi-fi access.
We encourage every member of the college to take responsibility for the development of their college, whether that is setting up a sports team, playing in a band, working backstage in a theatre production or editing the college website. Being young, we are not tied by traditions nor can new students be told 'that's the way we do things' - you will help decide how we do things and innovations you develop might remain part of college practice years after you have graduated.
The college spirit ties our college values, the personalities of our undergraduates, postgraduates, staff and senior common room members together into a cohesive whole. College life is crucial to every college member's development and every college member is crucial to the development of college life. Josephine Butler College gives students the perfect mix of traditional and modern atmospheres in which to undertake their academic and personal growth.Adrian Simpson, Principal, Josephine Butler College
