Professor Laurence Ferry

Professor in Accounting

Prof. Laurence Ferry is a Professor in Accounting at Durham University Business School. He earned his PhD from the Warwick Business School, is a qualified chartered accountant, and holds a first class accounting degree. His research, teaching and consulting covers accounting and accountability with a specific focus on the public sector where he is a recognized international expert in public financial management.

Biography

Prof. Laurence Ferry is a Professor in Accounting at Durham University Business School. He earned his PhD from the Warwick Business School, is a qualified chartered accountant, prestigious elected Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accounting and holds a first class accounting degree. His research, teaching and consulting covers accounting and accountability with a pecific focus on the public sector where he is a recognized international expert in public financial management.

In recent years Laurence has had public policy impact based research published at the nexus of accounting and public administration in journals that include Management Accounting Research (MAR), European Accounting Review (EAR), Financial Accountability and Management (FAM), Accounting, Accountability and Auditing Journal (AAAJ), Critical Perspectives on Accounting (CPA), Accounting Forum (AF), Public Administration Review (PAR) and Public Money and Management (PMM) among others.

He is currently an Associate Editor at AF and sits on the editorial boards of both AAAJ and PMM, as well as reviewing for many leading accounting and public sector journals.

He has been personally invited to present his research at COP21 - the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference in Paris, and written reports funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), European Union (EU) and the National Audit Office (NAO).

Also his research has been translated into a jazz theatre musical ‘The Austerity Playbook’ as part of the Freedom City 2017 international cultural event and into an animated short online video to show how local accountability could potentially work post-Brexit.

In addition, Laurence is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice and Learning (PCAPL). Teaching interests focus on management accounting and control, and governance. He has received various awards in recognition of academic and executive teaching, including recently receiving the Deans Award for Teaching. Also he has held several visiting professorships internationally.

Furthermore, professionally over the past decade, Laurence has engaged with senior government, banking and multi-national representatives of around thirty countries. This is from various roles that he has undertaken in a research, consulting and training capacity. In the UK, recently this has included engagement with the National Audit Office (NAO), Centre for Public Scrutiny (CfPS) and Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG). Internationally this experience ranges from the National Development and Reform Commission of the Peoples Republic of China, ICBC Bank (the world’s largest bank) and NORINCO from China, to the Economic Financial Crimes Commission and Supreme Court of Nigeria, to King Faisal Hospital of Saudi Arabia and to the Ministry of Finance of Bangladesh as just some examples. Previously he has held senior roles in central government, municipalities and consultancy including as Head of Finance and Resources and special adviser to CEOs.
