Institute of Directors Annual Business Leaders Dinner

On 15 March 2018, the Institute of Directors (IoD) hosted its Annual Business Leaders Dinner at the Crowne Plaza.

Dr Joanna Berry, Associate Professor Entrepreneurship at Durham University Business School, who hosted the event, said:

“The evening was a great success. Over 180 attendees came along, including senior business people, MBA students, a whole table of Durham University business development and executive team staff and a fair scattering of military contacts (the risk assessment for spurs and swords was not something I had done before).”

Raffle prizes were offered in aid of Help for Heroes by Durham University, The Smile Spa, Durham Distillery, Northburn Home Fragrances, Barbour and Aston Martin, raising over £2500 for this great cause. The event was also supported by Love Tide Water, Barclays, as well as the main event sponsor, Square One Law.

Dr Berry said:

“The military band played throughout and I had my very own one-man fanfare for my speech. However I was completely outclassed by “Ice Maiden” Major Sandy Hennis, who put the Beast from the East firmly in its place with her story, videos and pictures of minus 56 degree, crevasse-jumping, deep water diving, unsupported trekking across the Antarctic with five other intrepid female military companions. It was, apparently, either Desert Island Discs or The Archers that kept them all going, and they made it thirteen days earlier than expected.”

Additional members from the Business School also attended the event, including, Tracey Wallis Million, Corporate Relations Manager and Tracy Donnelly, Project Coordinator. Both attended the dinner and assisted the students throughout this senior networking event.

Dr Berry concluded:

“It was a great evening for networking. Not only did our MBA students get some first-hand experience of ‘working the room’ but also three companies have approached us for business projects, we have two more applications for MBA and Online MBA places in the works, and I have gathered a fair number of new names for my ‘guest speakers’ list.”
