Dr Dong Liu (Georgia Institute of Technology): Dissecting Event System Theory: Tenets and Opportunities for Organisational Research
The current paradigm of management research places a primary emphasis on entities’ static characteristics. The events experienced by entities, however, are also affecting and altering entities.
Hence, Morgeson, Mitchell, and Liu (2015) advanced event system theory that highlights an event-oriented approach to promoting the development of management theory, practice, and consulting. In this seminar, I will first elaborate on the philosophical origin and tenets of event system theory: i.e., the ways event strength (novelty, disruption, and criticality), time (timing and duration), and space (origin, dispersion, and distance) determine the extent to which an event may impact entities. In addition, I will discuss the rich opportunities that the theory may bring to management research and practice. Finally, I will take collective employee turnover as an example to explain how event system theory can be applied to study interesting organizational phenomena.
About the Speaker
Dong Liu is an Associate Professor of Organizational Behaviour at the Ernest Scheller Jr. College of Business, Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his PhD in Business Administration from the Michael G. Foster School of Business at the University of Washington in 2011. He also holds an MPhil in Management from the Faculty of Business Administration at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
His research interests include creativity, event system theory, turnover, teams, and international entrepreneurship, with a particular focus on examining the multilevel interface between individuals, teams, and organizations across cultures. His research has been published and in press in the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Organizational Behaviour and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Management, Academy of Management Discoveries, Academy of Management Best Paper Proceedings, Ivey Case Publishing and elsewhere. He has taught courses at different levels including organizational behaviour (undergraduate), cross-cultural management (undergraduate and MBA), managing global workforce (EMBA), and advanced research methods (PhD).
He has received several recognitions for his research and teaching such as the Scholarly Achievement Award from the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management, the Best Paper with International Implications Award from the Organizational Behaviour Division of the Academy of Management, the Brady Family Award for Faculty Research Excellence, the Professor of the Year Award (Core Business Courses), and the Evening MBA Elective Professor of the Year Award from the Scheller College of Business at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Finalist for the Academy of Management Review Best Paper Award, and Ivey’s Ten Best Selling Cases from Ivey Case Publishing.
