Dr Joanna Berry

Associate Professor (Teaching) in Entrepreneurship


Joanna started at Durham University Business School in December 2015, following 12 years as both student and staff member at Newcastle University Business School, where she spent her last 5 years as Director of External Relations. Joanna was Academic Director of Executive MBA Programmes, and spent 2 years running Inkspot Science Ltd., the commercial iteration of a Single Programme-funded research project. She has an MA in Jurisprudence from St. Anne’s College, Oxford, and achieved her MBA (with Distinction) and PhD (in music industry digital business models) whilst at Newcastle University. Coming with Joanna to Durham is a 2 year KTP, with a focus on digital business models and big data in the area of ageing and health.

Joanna was born and brought up in the North East and remains passionate about increasing the profile and prosperity of the region through education and as well as her work in HE she spends quite some time talking to students of primary and secondary schools about careers and employability. She also works with various business organisations including the LEP, NECC, FSB, CIM and others to engage closely with the Northern Powerhouse agenda. She has had a number of international business positions, including Manager for Europe and East Asia for the World Economic Forum, and New Business Development Director for the Mobil 1 Motorsport/McLaren teams. She has also founded and run her own companies, including an international award-winning interactive content production (‘dot com’) company, a record label (as part of her PhD research) a database management service and a PR company.

Joanna is mentor to Business Enterprise companies and individuals in large and small corporate organisations. She is Governor and Chair of Marketing for a girls’ school in Newcastle and sits on the Regional Board of the CIM and the Board of the NECC’s International Trade Committee. 

Joanna is Senior Teaching Fellow responsible for entrepreneurship teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and is also Pathway Leader for the newly-launched MBA programme’s Entrepreneurship pathway. She works closely with the Centre for Entrepreneurship and the School’s Honorary Entrepreneurial Fellows, and is currently External Examiner in the Revalidation process for the MBA programme at UEL.
