Our Postgraduate Community
I am delighted, as the Principal of the College, to introduce you to the Van Mildert College community.
If you choose to join our College, and I hope you do, you will be an integral part of one of the largest colleges of Durham University, boasting over 1750 undergraduates and about 200 postgraduates. As a postgraduate student, you will be a member of our Middle Common Room or MCR. The Van Mildert College MCR is one of the most active and progressive in the University and is an important link between the Junior (undergraduates) and Senior (staff and friends from the City) common rooms. It reflects a true diversity of academic aspirations and cultures that significantly enrich the life of our college.
Many of you will experience a first taste of academic independence, an experience that can be inspiring and stimulating but challenging. Our MCR is fortunate to have an active postgraduate community that is there to provide companionship and support during this important stage in your career. However, this is not a one-way process. The MCR depends very heavily on your engagement and participation at all levels in its organization, as does the College itself. Any contribution you can make to College life will be valued. It promises to be an exciting and challenging year for the MCR with a greater than ever focus on the postgraduate experience in the colleges.
Below you will find much more information, which has been put together for prospective postgraduate students by current students; we hope you find the content both helpful and enjoyable.
I reiterate my very best wishes for the coming academic year and wish you every success in your examinations. I hope to meet some of you soon, whether you choose to live in or out of College and introduce you personally to our caring and supportive community.
Prof. David A.T. Harper,
Principal of Van Mildert College and Professor of Palaeontology
