Van Mildert is located on the 'hill' approximately 15 minutes walk from the centre of Durham City. We are close to the University's Science Site, approximately a 10 minute stroll, and only a few minutes' walk to the rest of the University's Departments.
Our beautiful grounds centre around a stunning lake, complete with our very own ducks!
They're great for picnics in the summer and a brisk walk in winter. Our College ducks are literally at the centre of College life – we have even built them their own "duck house".
In the summer term, our lake is the centrepiece for our Jam by the Lake music festival.
Our Jubilee Garden was created to celebrate Van Mildert College's 50th anniversary in 2015 and is the perfect place to relax and unwind.
The Mildert Feather
By the lake, set against the beautiful Jubilee Garden, is the Mildert Feather. A very special sculpture by the Danish artist Erik Heide, it is a rotating metal mallard feather created to mark the achievements of Van Mildert College, its students past and present, and its staff on the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the College in 2015.
We hope you will join us as the Guardians of the Feather and help ensure that this artwork, a key part of our heritage, will remain for many years to come, signalling the ambitions and achievements of our great College.
