Early Career Conference in Catholic Theology and Catholic Studies

Organised by the Centre for Catholic Studies, Durham University, with support from the Newman Association and The Tablet

This day conference is a chance for postgraduate students and other early career researchers to meet and to present their research in a collegial environment. Sessions will be chaired by Carmody Grey, Chris Insole, Karen Kilby, Paul D. Murray, Anna Rowlands, and Rik Van Nieuwenhove.


9.30am Arrival
10am-4.30pm Short papers (with breaks for refreshments and lunch)
5pm Keynote Lecture: Dr Edward Howells (University of Roehampton): Human Desire and Divine Desire: The Case of John of the Cross
6.30pm Close. Participants who wish to stay for dinner will share a meal in a local restaurant on the evening of the conference (£13 approx. including drink, starter and main course, payable on the evening directly to the restaurant). If you register for the day, you will be notified when registration for the dinner opens.


Registration is essential; please register online via Eventbrite by 8 May 2019.


  • Durham University students and staff: free of charge. Please enter your discount code (sent to you by email) at the time of booking, and register with your Durham University email address.
  • Others: £15 per person (reduced from £25 as a result of the support of the Newman Association. £15 includes registration, buffet lunch, morning and afternoon refreshments, and 4.30pm drinks reception.
