Welcome to our new postgraduates

Your first week in Durham

Postgraduate student welcome and induction activities take place from Wednesday 23 September to Friday 2 October, with teaching commencing on Monday 5 October 2020. Use the Personal Induction Planner to plan your first week’s activities by College and Department. Additional information will be provided for Middle Common Room (MCR) events.

Welcome to the MCR

The MCR exists to create a welcoming and active community for postgraduates, as well as fourth year and mature students.

The MCR (Middle Common Room) hosts regular social events, such as film or games nights, a chance to unwind with fellow postgraduates. We also host termly MCR formals, which includes a drinks reception, three course meal and after-dinner entertainment.

We also provide an academic and pastoral support network. Our regular Broaderlands Seminars provide an opportunity for students to present their research in a friendly environment, while the Welfare sub-Committee coordinates peer support, in conjunction with the college officers.

The MCR is housed in the Postgraduate Centre in 7 South Bailey, which offers a recently refurbished kitchen (where you can enjoy free tea coffee and biscuits, which are replenished daily), a living room with a television, films and games consoles, as well as group and individual study spaces. There are several networked computers in our newly-refurbished computer room (as well as free printing!).

The MCR is also a subsidiary common room of the wider SJCR (St John’s Common Room), which is open to all students at St John’s. The SJCR runs all the big events in College, such as the Bailey Ball and John’s Day, as well as all the Sports Teams and Societies. Membership of the MCR also means you can access all the SJCR resources and get involved with everything it has to offer, the most recent addition being an Academic Journal, which will be published for the first time in December.

Membership of the MCR costs £45. To join, tick the box on the online Induction Questionnaire or email

We’d also greatly encourage you to get involved in running the MCR as part of the Executive Committee, which will be elected in October. If you’d like to find out more, please get in touch at
